Whether you are looking to boost your CV, meet workplace safety requirements, or simply want the confidence to save a life, getting a first aid certificate in the UK is a straightforward process.
Choose the Right Certificate for Your Role
The type of certificate you need depends mostly on your environment. The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to provide "adequate and appropriate" equipment and personnel. Usually, this falls into one of three main categories:
- Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) - A one day course for low risk environments like offices, retail shops, or small businesses. You'll learn basic life support, CPR, choking, and treating minor wounds or shock.
- First Aid at Work (FAW) - A three day course for higher risk environments such as construction sites, factories, or large warehouses. Everything in EFAW, plus heart attacks, head injuries, spinal injuries, poisoning, and fractures.
- Paediatric First Aid - A one or two day course for nursery staff, childminders, and teachers.
Understanding Accreditation: FAIB vs. Ofqual
When you book a course, you will often see mentions of different bodies. It is important to know that both are widely accepted, but they offer different routes to compliance.
The First Aid Industry Body (FAIB)
The FAIB is a trade body that monitors and regulates training providers. FAIB certificates are fully recognised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Department for Education (DfE). Many businesses prefer FAIB because the courses are often more flexible while maintaining high quality standards.
Ofqual Regulated Qualifications
Ofqual is the government department that regulates qualifications in England. These courses are often referred to as Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) levels (e.g., Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work). Some large corporate or government contracts specifically require Ofqual regulated certificates.
How to Get Certified in First Aid
Getting your certificate involves three simple steps:
Needs Assessment: Check with your employer or your industry's governing body to see if you need EFAW, FAW, or Paediatric training.
Attend the Training: Most courses involve a mix of theory and hands on practice. You will practice CPR on manikins, use a defibrillator (AED), and learn how to apply bandages.
Assessment and Certification: Your trainer will assess your practical skills throughout the day and you'll complete a short assessment at the end of the course. Once you pass, your certificate is usually sent digitally or by post and is valid for three years.
Keeping Your Skills Fresh
First aid skills can fade quickly. The HSE strongly recommends attending an Annual Refresher Course (usually 3 hours) to keep your knowledge up to date between your three year renewals. If your current certificate is about to expire, you can also take a 2 Day Re-qualification Course instead of the full 3 day course.
