Course outline

  • Anatomy and physiology of veins, including site selection for optimal venepuncture and cannulation access.
  • Infection prevention and control standards, with hand hygiene, PPE, and aseptic non-touch technique (ANTT).
  • Phlebotomy (venepuncture) procedure step-by-step: equipment preparation, patient preparation, phlebotomy skill, and labelling.
  • Cannulation skills: vein selection, catheter insertion, securing devices, and flushing.
  • Recognising and managing complications like haematomas, infiltration, phlebitis, and extravasation.

Course outline

  • Assess an emergency scene safely, check a casualty’s response, and carry out a Primary Survey (DR ABC).
  • Learn when and how to give life‑saving CPR, use an AED safely, and know when to call for help or stop resuscitation.
  • Practise high‑quality CPR and AED use on manikins to build confidence and good technique.
  • Conduct a Secondary Survey, place a casualty into the Recovery Position, and perform ongoing breathing checks.
  • Recognise the signs of a partially or completely blocked airway and provide effective treatment for choking.

  • Provide everyday paediatric first aid for allergic reactions, bumps, bruises, bleeding, burns, breaks, and head injuries.
  • Spot "Red Flags" like Sepsis and meningitis in babies and children, and know exactly what to do while waiting for help.
