Paediatric First Aid course outline
During your 6-hour Paediatric First Aid session in Nottingham, our nurse-led tutors will cover:
Understand the role and responsibilities of the paediatric first aider, including the contents of a paediatric first aid kit and how to maintain accident and incident records.
Recognise and manage an unresponsive child or infant: check response, open the airway, check breathing, place in the recovery position where appropriate, and deliver rescue breaths when indicated.
Perform high-quality CPR on children and infants using age-appropriate techniques and use an AED safely.
Identify and treat a child with a partially or completely blocked airway, including choking protocols for babies and toddlers.
Manage a child suffering from a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) and support the safe use of an auto-injector in line with local policy.
Recognise the signs and symptoms of meningitis and meningococcal disease and respond appropriately.
Provide first aid for fractures, dislocations, head injuries, burns, scalds, bites, stings and electric shock in infants and children.
Treat bleeding and recognise and manage shock in paediatric casualties, including when to seek urgent medical help.
Manage common paediatric medical emergencies including asthma attacks, seizures, febrile convulsions, diabetic emergencies and other allergic reactions in children.
Complete an assessment to receive a FAIB-accredited Paediatric First Aid certificate, recognised by Ofsted and EYFS and accepted as equivalent to a Level 3 Paediatric First Aid qualification for childcare and early years settings.
Includes assessment & certification
This course concludes with a formal assessment in Paediatric First Aid. Upon successful completion, you will be awarded an industry-recognised certificate confirming your competence.

Who is the Paediatric First Aid course for?
This course is designed for anyone working with babies and children, including nursery staff, childminders, early years practitioners, teaching assistants, nannies and after-school or holiday club staff. It is also suitable for parents, carers and anyone who wants the confidence to respond to paediatric emergencies.
How long is Paediatric First Aid?
About 6 hours of e-learning plus 6 hours in person. That is the full EYFS-style qualification, not a shorter emergency paediatric first aid day.
Is this the same as TinyHearts?
No. Paediatric First Aid is for childcare staff who need Ofsted and EYFS evidence. TinyHearts is a 2-hour session for parents and carers, and it is not an Ofsted qualification.
Is Paediatric First Aid accredited training?
Yes. This Paediatric First Aid course is accredited by the First Aid Industry Body (FAIB) and is designed to meet Ofsted and EYFS requirements for early years and childcare settings. It is nationally recognised as equivalent to the Ofqual Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF).
You will receive a certificate that satisfies the requirements set out by the Department for Education and Ofsted.
How is Paediatric First Aid assessed?
Paediatric First Aid is assessed through a mix of continuous practical assessment and a final written evaluation. You can access our mock Paediatric First Aid exam here.
What is a "Blended" element?
The course includes around 6 hours of e-learning delivered through our provider, eLearn. This means you can complete part of your training online at your own pace from any device.
You must complete e-learning before your practical day so you can undertake the required assessments. If you're unsure about anything in the material, don't worry. Your qualified instructor will be there on the day to answer any questions and help bring everything together.
How long is a Paediatric First Aid certificate valid for?
Your Paediatric First Aid certificate is typically valid for three years from the date of your practical training session. To keep your skills current and remain compliant with EYFS and Ofsted expectations, we recommend refreshing your training before the certificate expires.
What should I wear for the session?
We recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing (like trousers and a t-shirt) and flat shoes. Our training involves active clinical simulation and practical skills, such as CPR and recovery positions, so you will need to move around freely and kneel on the floor.
What should I bring on the day?
As this is an accredited programme, please bring your booking confirmation, photo ID and a notepad. All training materials are provided. Please also bring your own refreshments.
